Typologies of Tubâ

As part of my research for 'A World of Islands’, I looked into the practice of tapping coconut sap (Tubâ is the name of the resulting drink) that exists across the Philippine archipelago and throughout the coastal regions of Pacific Mexico. Through a series of ceramic vessel developed in collaboration with Ceramica Suro in Guadalajara, Mexico and ceramic drinking pods made at the Kingston University workshops, collectively called ‘Typologies of Tubâ’, I sought to interrogate practices of ‘making home’ amongst Filipinos displaced by the galleon trade during the period of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade between Mexico and the Philippines (1565 – 1815).
